Sierra Nevada will host an SBX World Cup next season

The International Ski Federation (FIS) has approved this week at its annual congress the World Cup calendar for the 2022/23 season in which the winter resort of Sierra Nevada, at the proposal of the RFEDI-Spainsnow, has been confirmed as the venue for a Snowboardcross (SBX) event.

The Sierra Nevada SBX World Cup, which will be possible thanks to the support of the public company Turismo Andaluz, will be held on the Sulayr snowpark circuit, in the Loma de Dílar area, on 11 and 12 March 2023, with official training sessions on the 10th. The competition will consist of an individual race (11th March) and a mixed team race (12th).

The last time Sierra Nevada hosted the SBX World Cup was in March 2020 and it ended with the undisputed triumph of Basque rider Lucas Eguibar, who has a special love affair with the Granada resort and the podium.

Sierra Nevada, with the 2023 SBX World Cup, is consolidating its position as one of the regular venues at world level for one of the most spectacular disciplines in winter sports.

The first SBX World Cup was held in 2005 in the Borreguiles tube, although from the 2012 Junior World Championships onwards the Snowboardcross competition stage was moved to the Sulayr snowpark circuit, in Loma de Dílar. Since then, international SBX events have taken place there in 2013 (Snowboard World Cup Finals), 2015 (Winter Universiade), 2017 (Snowboard and Freestyle World Championships) and 2020 (World Cup).

Spain is a power in SBX with active athletes from the MovistarSBXTeam such as Lucas Eguibar, current world champion (Idre Fjall, Sweden) in 2021 and runner-up in the individual and team world championships in Sierra Nevada 2017. In addition, there will be the participation of new talents such as Álvaro Romero, an 18-year-old who has already won the bronze medal at the junior world championships in Krasnoyarsk (Russia) in 2021 and has achieved several top 10s in the World Cup.

The Sierra Nevada SBX World Cup 2020 will be organised by the resort, the Andalusian Winter Sports Federation (FADI) and RFEDI-Spainsnow, with the support of Turismo Andaluz.

Award

In other news, Spain came eighth in the FIS Snowkidz Award. The project presented by RFEDI, winner at last autumn's Winter Sports Gala in Madrid from among the several presented, was 'My First Day in the Snow', carried out by the Andalusian Winter Sports Federation (FADI) and the Granada club Cero Grados. This project has enabled 1,620 children to try skiing last winter.
